About General Assembly

At General Assembly, we are creating a global community of individuals empowered to pursue work they love, by offering full-time immersive programs, long-form courses, and classes and workshops on the most relevant skills of the 21st century – from web development and user experience design, to business fundamentals, to data science, to product management and digital marketing. Established in early 2011 as an innovative community in New York City for entrepreneurs and startup companies, General Assembly is an educational institution that transforms thinkers into creators through education in technology, business and design at nine campuses across four continents.

About Education Entrepreneurs

Education Entrepreneurs is the official community within UP Global that helps people leverage entrepreneurship to improve education outcomes. Education Entrepreneurs offers a suite of year-round programs, including Startup Weekend Education (SWEDU), Startup Digest Education, bootcamps, meetups, resources, and a global network of Community Leaders who are eager to help. Located in all six major continents, Education Entrepreneurs makes it easy for anyone, anywhere to play an active role in shaping the future of education.

Judging Criteria:

Education Impact:

  • Is this solving a problem in education? (i.e. the solution focuses on the acquisition of knowledge, the transfer of knowledge, teaching, learning, retention of information)
  • Is this solving a significant problem in education?
  • Is this solution better than what’s being done now?
  • Will this solution make a significant impact in the world?

Experience (how does the product look & feel):

  • Is your product easy and intuitive for the user to navigate?
  • Is your product engaging?
  • How does your product feel?

Execution (what was built):

  • How effective is your a “Minimal Viable Product” for the weekend (be it software, hardware, etc.)? 
  • Were you able to incorporate customer feedback into the solution?
  • How much is built?

Validation (is this business feasible, do you have customers):

  • What is your key value proposition?
  • Who will be your users, who will be your customers (are they different)?
  • How many users have you engaged with?
  • How did you validate your problem & solution with customers, and what did you learn from them?
  • How do you plan on making this a successful business? (have you thought about competition, how to scale, acquiring customers, revenue model etc.)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The winning team will present a startup idea focused on education.
  • The winning team’s use of technology will make their product or service more broadly available.

Education, Empowered Track Prizes

$20,000 USD in GA Courses

Build out your prototype, improve the UX design, create a marketing plan, or develop a product roadmap in our part-time and full-time courses.* (*winning team can choose to distribute their courses as they see fit across team members, utilizing up to $20,000 USD of course credit).

$5,000 USD Living Stipend

For those teams not located in a city with a GA campus, this prize money will go towards their living expenses as they take their courses. For teams that do live in a GA metro, this money can go towards funding their living expenses as they develop their startup.

One-on-One Mentoring Sessions

Refine your idea and learn how to make it successful in one-on-one sessions with executives at General Assembly.

40 hours of Support

Receive up to 40 hours of support from students and graduates of our full-time Web Development and User Experience Design immersive programs. You’ll get help building and designing your product so you can bring it to life faster and smarter.
