Global Startup Battle Contest Rules

NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. ALL FEDERAL, STATE, LOCAL, AND MUNICIPAL LAWS AND REGULATIONS APPLY. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW.

Global Startup Battle (the “Contest”) is a video-based startup competition held by Startup Weekend beginning on November 17, 2013 and ending on December 16, 2013 at 11:59 PST (the “Contest Period”).  Attendees of Startup Weekend events between November 14 and November 25, 2013 are eligible to participate in Global Startup Battle with the team they formed during the weekend only.  For a list of Startup Weekend events, go to:  “www.globalstartupbattle.com/cities.”  Entrants in the Contest must submit a sixty (60)-second video describing the company they have formed applying the judging criteria set forth by Startup Weekend.  There are five (5) themed competitions within the Contest called “Circles,” each with its own eligibility requirements, judging criteria, and prizes outlined below.  Participants may enter all of the Circles they wish, but only entries that meet the specific entry requirements set forth for a particular Circle will be eligible to enter or win that Circle.  Disqualification from one Circle does not necessarily disqualify participants from other Circles as each Circle has different entry requirements. Entrants may not win multiple Circles.

1.         Eligibility

The Contest is open to individuals who: (a) have reached the older of 18 years old or the age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence and have the full legal capacity to participate in this Contest at time of entry; and (b) attended a Startup Weekend event between November 14, 2013 and November 25, 2013 (“Event”).  See additional eligibility requirements for the Circles below.  Entrants may not be members of any guild, union or other organization that may prohibit them from participating in this Contest and that would restrict, require due payment or otherwise have the right to oppose such entrant’s participation in this Contest.  Employees of UP Global, its subsidiaries, affiliates, prize sponsors and supplies, and advertising and promotional agencies, and their immediate families (spouse, parents, children, siblings and their spouses) and individuals living in the same household as such employees are also ineligible.  This Contest is governed by the laws of the United States and is subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.  Prizes will be awarded in the name of the individual who entered.  The Contest is void where prohibited by law.

2.         Sponsor

This Contest is sponsored by Startup Weekend, located at 1700 7th Ave., Suite 116 #147, Seattle, Washington 98101, U.S.A.

3.         Agreement to Official Rules

Participation in the Contest constitutes each entrant’s full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these Official Rules and the decisions of the judges, Sponsor, and prize sponsors, which shall be final and binding in all respects. Winning a prize is contingent upon the winner being compliant with these Official Rules and fulfilling all other requirements set forth herein. Odds of winning this skill contest depend upon the number of eligible entries received.

4.         Contest Period and Structure

The Contest begins on November 17, 2013 and ends on December 16, 2013 at 11:59pm PST (the Contest Period). Entries that are submitted before or after the Contest Period will be disqualified.

The Contest Period will consist of four phases: (a) Event attendance; (b) Video submission; (c) Voting; and (d) Judging.

(a)    Event Attendance Phase:  Entrants must have attended an official Startup Weekend event between November 14 and 25, 2013.

(b)   Video Submission Phase:  Entrants will have 24 hours from the conclusion of their Event to submit a sixty (60) second video entry. Only videos received by Sponsor within 24 hours after the conclusion of the submitting entrant’s Event will be considered. Videos exceeding sixty (60) seconds in length will be disqualified, though Startup Weekend reserves the right to decide on a case by case basis about inclusion of videos within ten (10) seconds of that maximum time.  Videos must be submitted online in accordance with these rules.  No other submission method will be accepted.

(c)    Voting Phase:  Accepted video entries will go live for a crowd-based voting phase starting on November 26, 2013 and ending on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. PST.  Entrants will be provided a link to their video entry to share. The public will vote, applying the judging criteria.  The top fifteen (15) vote collectors in each Circle will move on to the judging phase. Startup Weekend reserves the right to admit more than fifteen (15) entries if there are teams within one hundred (100) votes of 15th place. Starting December 6, 2013 at 11:59 PST, votes will no longer be collected or counted and entries may be removed from the Contest platform.

An email address, first name, last name, and city of residence is required to vote. Each voter may submit one vote per Circle during the Voting Phase. Email addresses will be confirmed by Startup Weekend. Any fake or unverified email addresses, email addresses not owned by the voter, or email addresses created with the specific intent of obtaining extra votes will be deemed ineligible to vote, in the sole discretion of Sponsor.  Votes received from ineligible emails will not be counted.  Team members and entrants are allowed to vote for their own teams.  All email addresses of voters will be automatically subscribed to the Startup Weekend and StartupDigest email lists. (Voters will have the option to “opt-out” from these email lists at any time.)

Votes received (directly or indirectly) from paid service sites (including, but not limited to, fiverr.com, taskrabbit.com, etc.) will be disqualified and not count toward the total number of votes a team receives. Teams are not allowed to pay for votes in any fashion.  If it is found that a team member solicited paid votes, Startup Weekend reserves the right to disqualify that team. No appeal process will be granted. Startup Weekend is not required to divulge the information that led to a paid vote disqualification and is also not responsible in the event cases of paid or otherwise falsified votes are not caught. Entrants recognize that upon entering this Contest, the open vote format introduces insecurities and risk for the integrity of the Contest and that they have no legal or other recourse in these events.

(d)   Judging Phase:  The Judging Phase begins on December 9, 2013.  Entries will be judged by a panel of entrepreneurial experts applying the judging criteria set forth in these Rules for each Circle.

5.         How to Enter

Online: To enter, go to our website (globalstartupbattle.com) and follow the directions provided to fill out the entry information, and submit.  Upload the video to YouTube and the link provided. The video and voting platform will be provided by Studyka (http://studyka.com).  No other method of entry will be accepted.  If YouTube is blocked in your country, submit your entry on our website and email “gsb@startupweekend.org” and we will attempt to upload the video to YouTube for you.

Limit one (1) entry per person, per email address, and per household for the duration of the Global Startup Battle. Entries received from any person, e-mail address, or householdin excess of the stated limitation will be void. All entries to Circles become the property of UP Global as well as the prize sponsor of that Circle and will not be acknowledged or returned.

Judging Criteria and Judges:  Startup Weekend reserves all rights in judge selection and will provide a set of approximately seven (7) qualified judges for each Circle. Specific judging criteria for each Circle is listed below.  Each judge will rate teams on 4 to 6 categories (depending on the Circle) from 1-10 based on how well the judges think the team meets the criteria.  Their total score will determine their ranking.

Grounds for Disqualifications:  Startup Weekend reserves the right to disqualify individual entrants and/or teams for any action Sponsor or one of the prize sponsors deems to be cheating. Cheating includes but is not limited to:

  • Paying or in any way exchanging goods or services for votes
  • Asking others to solicit paid votes
  • Creation of fake emails to get extra voting accounts
  • Any manipulation or ‘hacking’ of the voting platform to change or add votes
  • Any action designed to allow for one person to receive more than one vote per Circle
  • Any action taken not in the spirit of the Startup Weekend and entrepreneurial community

6.         Awarding Prizes

On or about December 12, 2013, after the conclusion of the Judging Phase, Startup Weekend qualified judges applying the judging criteria will select the winners.  Entrants need not be present to win.  Startup Weekend reserves the right in its sole discretion to apply the judging criteria and select a winner of their choosing for each Circle.

A team is only eligible to win one Circle. If Judges name one team the winner of more than one Circle, then judges applying the judging criteria will determine which one (1) Circle the winner ultimately wins.  The first runner-up in the other Circle will then win that Circle.

7.         Winner Notification

The potential winners will be notified by email within five (5) to ten (10) business days of selection. Winners will be required to complete, sign and submit an Affidavit of Eligibility/Winner’s Release/Prize Acceptance Form within five (5) days of the date notice or attempted notice is sent, in order to claim a prize. If a potential winner cannot be contacted, or fails to submit an Affidavit of Eligibility/Winner’s Release/Prize Acceptance Form within five (5) business days, or if the prize is returned as undeliverable, the potential winner forfeits the prize. If the potential winner is at least 18 but still considered a minor in his/her jurisdiction of residence, Sponsor reserves the right to award the prize in the name of his/her parent or legal guardian, who will be required to sign the Affidavit of Eligibility/Winner’s Release/Prize Acceptance Form on the potential winner’s behalf and fulfill any other requirements imposed on the winner set forth herein. Potential winners must continue to comply with all terms and conditions of these Official Rules.  Winning is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements. In the event that a potential winner is disqualified for any reason, Sponsor will award the applicable prize to the next runner up, based on the judges’ application of the judging criteria.
